ArtFibrations - Kathy Hoath
Kathy is a fibre artist specializing in wet felting, although often combining it with other techniques and media to expand its expressive potential. She is drawn to the medium’s transformative nature — the way loose wool fibres become a resilient fabric shaped by hand, soap and water. The sensory richness of felting: the colours, the changing textures and even the scent of the process continue to enchant her. Since discovering felting in 2010, Kathy has moved on from self-taught beginnings to learning online from global experts. Drawing from this diverse knowledge, she has cultivated a distinctive style — although she still considers herself a student, with much to explore. Her three-dimensional works are experimental, often pushing the boundaries of the medium.
They investigate form, structure, balance and movement — merging artistic vision with engineering inquiry. She relishes the challenge of making complex forms in felt, where each piece is both a question and a solution. Her inspiration comes from nature, mathematics, architecture, mythology, sport and dance.
